European Championship in Portugal

Team GB won six medals at the European Championships held in Portugal. Innes Fitzgerald won the U20 for the third consecutive year in 14:35. He then commented: “I wanted to work it up as the laps went by because I knew the slightly hilly track would make it a bit challenging and especially being quite soft underfoot. But the onset was faster than I thought it would be. It’s awesome and that’s what I love about cross country, there’s also that team element, so you always have girls behind you supporting you, and that brings me back every year.” Beth Lewis, 16, is 12th, Isabelle Holt 20thth and Eliza Nicholson 37thit was enough to confirm U20 gold for Team GB as well.

It was no surprise that Nadia Battocletti won the senior race in 24:52. A great run by Megan Keith saw her finish just 15 seconds back. After ten seconds I felt flat on my face, I dropped to the last place, so I tried to be patient but it was difficult, I didn’t want to be at the back, but all the time I was trying to take it easy and try to measure my effort. my mind and nerves during the race.” With Phoebe Anderson at 4 p.mthVerity Ockenden 9 p.mSt and Poppy Tank 22thGB took team silver.
