Etienne Daguinos set a European 10 km record in Lille

The distance runner clocks 27:04 and is three seconds off Jimmy Gresier’s mark with a super run in the French city.

Etienne Daguinos set a European 10km record with a sensational performance at the Urban Trail de Lille (November 16).

The Frenchman clocked 27:04, shaving three seconds off compatriot Jimmy Gresier’s previous European record.

Daguinos, who was part of the French under-23 team that won silver at the 2022 European Cross-Country Championships, covered the 10km half-marathon in a personal best time of 59:46, which placed him in tenth place. European all-time list over 13.1 miles.

“I can’t believe it,” Daguinos said. “Some might have predicted it (10km record), but I didn’t believe it. I knew I was in good shape after the half marathon in Valencia. I wanted to run faster than 27:30 and I’m still in shock.”

Not only did Daguinos beat a strong and deep field in Lille, but he did it by running an even 13:32 over the 5km distance.

World 1500m bronze medalist Narve Guillermo Nordas broke the Norwegian 10km record in 27:31, while Mohamed Abdilaahi clocked 27:40, the fastest time ever by a German.

This puts the pair seventh and joint tenth on the all-time European 10km list, respectively.

It means Mo Farah, who ran 27:44 in 2010 to hold the European 10km record until Julien Wanders clocked 27:32 in 2018, is now 13th in the rankings.

With six of the eight fastest 10km times by a European athlete coming this season, expect the record books to go down again next year.

Daguinos, who occasionally trains at Font Romeu and also has trail running experience, is now in prime position to become the first European athlete to break the 27 minute barrier in the 10km.

Only 29 athletes have ever achieved the feat, and they are all from Africa.
