Ernesto Mercado injured, withdrew from Jonathan Montrel match against Hitchins-Cambosos undercap on MSG

Matchroom reports that Ernesto Mercado sustained an injury and will not go through his fight against Jonathan Montrel on Saturday, June 14 at the Theater in Madison Square Garden.

Mercado injured, fight canceled

The unbeaten light welterweight outlook Mercado (17-0, 16 COs) was scheduled to fight Montrel in a 10 round on the bottom map of Richardson Hitchins against George Kambosos Jr. On Dazn. Matchroom did not disclose what type of injury Mercado, 23, sustained. Mercado-Montrel will fight on the preliminary part of the map.

Losing Mercado from the map is a disappointment because it would have been interesting to see how he was fighting. He opposed increasingly better opposition, and it would not take long before fighting against the top 140 contenders.

Mercado is interested in the fight against Keyshawn Davis now that he has decided to move to light welter weight after being stripped of his WBO lightweight title last Friday after he did not make weight. It is likely that Keyshawn will not take up Mercado with his offer to fight against him.

Avoid boxer’s next steps

Ernesto is in a position where he will be avoided until he won a world title at 140. None of the top fighters will willingly fight Mercado without a belt or he becomes mandatory for one of the titles. Recently, Mercado Shakur called Stevenson, but he pretended not to know who he was and ignored his cry.

This news from the match room comes a day after Mercado Nahir called out Albright and said he wanted to relieve him of his title.

The bottom map still contains many notable fighters, including Andy Cruz, Teremoana Jr., Zaquin Moses and Pablo Valdez. Promoter Eddie Hearn has put together an excellent bottom map to go with the main meeting between Hitchins and Kambosos.
