Erling Haaland signs extraordinary new contract with Man City

Erling Haaland has signed a blockbuster new contract with Manchester City that ties him to the club until the summer of 2034, according to multiple reports.

The Norwegian enters his third season at the Etihad Stadium and has already scored 111 goals in all competitions in 126 appearances, 79 of those strikes coming in just 87 Premier League games.

Haaland’s previous deal was due to expire in the summer of 2027 and there had been strong suggestions that Real Madrid or Barcelonadespite his financial problems, he would try to lure him to LaLiga to play alongside or against the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Pedri and Gavi.

However, The Athletic report that Haaland has now signed a nine-and-a-half-year contract cityin what is understood to be one of the most ‘lucrative’ sports contracts ever awarded to a professional athlete. Haaland will be almost 34 when his contract expires and the deal is believed to have seen all previously included release clauses removed.

Fabrizio Romano states that a new clause will come into force from 2029, although it is unclear what the figure would be and is only described as “very high numbers”.

Haaland’s commitment for the vast majority of his playing career is a huge boost for a City side who have endured a torrid campaign that will almost certainly see them relinquish their Premier League crown.

City have won the title six of eight times under Pep Guardiola, but a shocking run of form that has yielded just two wins in 14 games in all competitions has left them on 12 points. Premier League pace set by Liverpool – they also have a game in hand – and also well below the reformed Champions League table in 22nd position.

Wins in City’s final two group games will be needed to ensure safe passage to the next stage, no doubt putting pressure on Haaland’s shoulders to do so. The 24-year-old has scored five goals in six Champions League appearances so far this season, while he is second in the race for the Premier League’s Golden Boot behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

News of Haaland’s new contract is expected to become official soon in what is an exceptionally busy month for City in transfer market Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush is closing in on a big-money move, and looks set to be joined by central duo Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis.
