Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is worried that Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez will have to play so much football this season.

According to Simon Phillips via Substackthis has led the Blues boss to call for midfield cover in this January transfer window, with Romeo Lavia seemingly unconvinced as an alternative.

Caicedo and Fernández have shown a magnificent partnership in Chelsea’s midfield this season, but it might be asking a lot for both of them to keep playing so much football between now and May.

Maresca had a good start at Chelsea, but recent results have been less than stellar, so the Italian tactician could do well to ask the board to bring in new additions to bolster his squad.

According to Phillips, Maresca “wants a new centre-back this month, and also some midfield cover”.

The report added: “At this point, we wouldn’t be surprised if one of Lesley Ugochukwu or Andrey Santos is withdrawn from their loan moves.

Maresca is worried about Enzo Fernández and Moises Caicedo having to play so much, and Romeo Lavia has not yet been reliable enough and is constantly injured”.

Lavia has not yet finished joining Chelsea, and it may be that Maresca considers that the time has come to consider a change in this area of the squad.

The talented young Belgian looked like a huge prospect at former club Southampton, but injuries have derailed his progress at Stamford Bridge.

CFC will want to raise the bar after investing heavily in a long-term project, and it may look increasingly likely that Lavia will be one of those who don’t quite make the cut.

No specific names are being mentioned at the moment, but one imagines that in the coming days it will become clearer who Chelsea can look to in midfield.
