Enzo Maresca has made an incredible start to life at Chelsea, but there is one decision that fans and pundits continue to question.
The Italian manager was brought to Stamford Bridge this summer to replace Mauricio Pochettino and the former Leicester boss currently has the Blues second in the Premier League and top of the Europa Conference League.
Maresca has found a way to get his young Chelsea squad to perform, but a decision the 44-year-old made before kicking a ball this season is still being questioned by many in the football world.
The Blues boss decided it make Robert Sánchez their number one goalkeeper of the seasonalthough the London club signed the talented 22-year-old Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal in the summer.
Sanchez is a liability between the posts for Chelsea, as the Spanish goalkeeper is an average goalkeeper, who is not good with the ball at his feet and is prone to making mistakes that lead to goals.
Despite this, Maresca is confident the 27-year-old has started all but one Premier League game in the first half of the season, which Jamie Carragher believes he will struggle for Chelsea this season.
That won’t change anytime soon, something the 44-year-old revealed to the press on Friday.
Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca will take over from Robert Sánchez
Speaking to the press on Friday ahead of Chelsea’s match with Brentford, Maresca claimed that Sanchez will not be removed from his position anytime soon.
“The idea is not to change, we trust Robert,” said the Italian coach via Fabrizio Romano. “But also in this case, we have two goalkeepers who are good. As long as they don’t maintain the same level, we’re happy with that.”
This is a decision that Maresca will live and die with as the season progresses, as it’s a choice that could end up having a huge impact on Chelsea’s season later on.
