England face an uphill battle to win back the Women’s Ashes, admits captain Heather Knight

England captain Heather Knight Australia remain optimistic despite the tough road ahead after sweeping ODIs in the Women’s Ashes 2025.

An 86-run win in Hobart gave the Aussies a 6-0 lead in the multi-format series. England need to win all three upcoming T20Is and the one-off Test to win back the Ashes.

“It’s going to be hard” Knight admitted in a recent interview. “But we’ve been here before. The last Ashes series was 6-0 and we managed to turn things around. We’re still alive, we’re still in it, and we have to keep believing.”

Missed opportunities in Hobart ODI

England produced their best performance of the series in Hobart, first reducing Australia to 59 for four. However, they fizzled out with both bat and ball at critical moments and allowed the hosts to post a daunting total. Despite parity at half-time in their chase, England failed to capitalise.

“We must keep our cool” Knight noted. “At key moments on the line, Australia handled them really well, but we just couldn’t seize the moment and get any advantage.”

The format change offers hope

England’s preparations for the next stages of the Ashes include a strategic focus on player fitness.

Kate CrossHe was rested to avoid aggravating a back injury that came close to playing in Hobart. Cross will now focus on training for the Melbourne Test starting on January 30 Tammy Beaumont and Ryana MacDonald-Gay. Meanwhile, the rest of the squad will focus on the T20Is.

Knight is optimistic about the format change, citing T20 cricket as one of England’s strengths. “The format change will be very good for us” he said. “T20 cricket is one of our best formats and this little reset will do us good.”

With renewed focus and confidence, England will aim to turn their fortunes around in the T20I phase of the series, keeping their hopes of winning the Ashes alive.
