Root scored his 33rd Test century during the third session of Day 1 play in the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s. He reached this milestone by hitting a boundary off the third ball of the 63rd ball delivered by him Lahiru Kumara. Root’s achievement came in his 145th Test match, equaling Cook’s tally of 33 centuries in 161 matches. Known as England’s leading run-scorer in Test cricket, Cook now shares this significant record with Root.

Sri Lanka started the day strongly, dominating the morning session of the second Test at Lord’s. The visitors capitalized on their advantage in the afternoon session and made key breakthroughs that stifled England’s progress. Despite a solid start in England’s top order, Sri Lanka’s bowlers made critical strides, seizing key opportunities to disrupt England’s batting.
