Elizabeth Leachman and Keegan Smith take first place at the 45th Annual Foot Locker XC Championships in the South Region.


The South Regional has a great reputation for some fast racers and great course conditions.Thirty-five degrees for North Carolina, but the athletes were ready. Check out the top ten southern boys and girls fighting in San Diego.

The top 10 boys and girls qualify for the national finals

Highlights of the race:

Elizabeth Leachman of San Antonio, TX and Keegan Smith of Kingston, TN won the Foot
Locker Cross Country Championship Southern Regional today. Leachman, Jr. at:
Boerne Champion High School won the girls championship race title in 16:55.5.
Caroline Barton, a senior from Asheville, NC, finished second in 16:59.4, and Lily.
Beshears, a junior from Springdale, AR, took third in 17:01.3 Leachman last year
national champion and today’s 10th place finisher Abby Faith Cheeseman of Bell Buckle;
TN participated in last year’s National Championship event in San Diego, CA.

Keegan Smith, a senior at Knoxville Catholic High School, won the boys title
championship race: 14:58.1. Jack Bowen, a senior from Chattanooga, TN, graduated
second in 14:59.9 and Tristan Yoder, a senior from Broadway, Va., finished third.
15:00.4. Sixth-place finisher Riku Sugi of Bardstown, Ky., is the lone finisher in today’s race.

  • Larry Eder has been involved in the sport of track and field for 52 years. Larry has experienced the sport as an athlete, coach, magazine publisher, and now as a journalist.
