Edgar Berlanga was overwhelmed by admirers on a holiday in Mexico. Adoring fans recognized the former super middleweight world title challenger after his recent clash against Canelo Alvarez.
Fans wanted to take photos with the 27-year-old Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs), who went the 12-round distance against superstar Canelo on Sept. 14, losing by unanimous decision by scores of 118-109, 117 -110, and 118-109. The performance by the Brooklyn, New York native showed that a fighter can become famous by being competitive against Canelo and not getting knocked out.
Berlanga feels he is going to be the next PPV star in the super middleweight division. He wants to capture a world title and has shown interest in going the IBF route to fight the winner of the William Scull vs. to face Vladimir Shishkin showdown.
However, the IBF’s 10-pound rehydration rule could be an obstacle for Berlanga fighting for that belt, as he is said to have rehydrated 193 pounds for his fight against Canelo Alvarez. It may be physically impossible for Berlanga not to rehydrate 20+ pounds after making weight for the 168-lb division.
What Berlanga could do is move up to 175 to make it easier for him to make weight, but he probably won’t fare well against undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev.
Berlanga’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, recently talked about him having to do a tune-up next in his native Puerto Rico. He is treated like a superstar there, even though he is not Puerto Rican. 38-year-old craftsman Gabriel Rosado has been mentioned as a potential opponent for Berlanga’s tune-up.
Berlanga said that he wants to fight Jaime Munguia next, and he feels that a fight between them will produce big numbers on PPV. He mentions that it would be another Mexico vs Puerto Rico type of fight. Besides Munguia, Berlanga would like to fight Jermall Charlo, who has fought just once in the past three years and is past his prime at 34.
