Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka bid an emotional farewell to fans after their 2-0 win over Arsenal in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
However, although it has been reported that there is an agreement for the veteran shot-stopper to join Saudi Arabia’s Al-Shabab, his future at the club remains in doubt as manager Eddie Howe appears reluctant to sanction the move.
Dubravka, 35, has been a reliable back-up for main goalkeeper Nick Pope but was expected to leave for Al-Shabab after the crucial semi-final clash. Reports suggest that the deal had been delayed earlier in the transfer window to ensure the Slovakian international was available for this important fixture.

After the game, Dubravka appeared emotional as he waved to the Newcastle faithful as they chanted his name, seemingly signaling the end of his time at St. James’ Park. However, manager Eddie Howe hinted that the goalkeeper’s departure is far from over.
talking with The Gazette after the match, Howe initially refused to comment on the farewell gesture, but eventually admitted his desire to keep Dubravka at the club.
“We have been preparing for this match with Martin. He’s playing really well at the moment and of course I’d hate to lose him,” Howe said.
The Newcastle manager admitted they would discuss the goalkeeper’s future with director of football Paul Mitchell:
“I don’t know anything, really. I’ve been head over heels in the game, so I’m sure I’ll talk to Paul at some point today.”
Howe also revealed his desire for Dubravka to not only stay for the rest of the season but sign a new contract: “That would be my wish,” he added.

Newcastle’s willingness to part with Dubravka stems from the club’s efforts to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules. The Magpies’ financial constraints have limited their spending power in recent windows, forcing them to offload players, even if it is against the manager’s wishes.
Dubravka is not the only player whose future at Newcastle is uncertain. Kieran Trippier, another key player under Howe, is also being considered for an exit by the board. However, Howe is said to be at odds with the hierarchy againas he considers Trippier a vital part of his team.
Although Dubravka’s move to Al-Shabab is reported to be imminent, Eddie Howe’s determination to keep hold of the goalkeeper could yet stop the transfer. With Newcastle struggling on multiple fronts this season, Howe’s preference for squad stability may clash with the club’s financial realities.
