Promoter Eddie Hearn says he will be interested in David Morrell, who is fighting Callum Smith for his WBO tussentage light heavyweight title. Morrell’s management will have to pay the asking price.
The way Hearn speaks, he has no interest in leaving Morrell anywhere near Smith, especially if he turned his career with a win over Joshua Buatsi last month. No one expected Smith to win the battle. Hearn must admit that he does not want Morrell to ruin things by beating Callum.
The price of morrell
Except for money, Hearn sees no value in Callum Smith (31-2, 22 COs) fighting by the recently beaten WBA ‘ordinary champion of 175 pounds of Morrell (11-1, 9 COs). It is unclear what kind of money Hearn of the management of the Cuban Morrell would expect to fight Smith for his WBO -Tussentage belt.
Hearn points out that Smith, 34, is the WBO who is compulsory for undisputed light heavyweight champion Dmitri Biblical. So, all Callum has to do is sit and wait. Eventually, he gets a world title against Biblical or who holds the WBO title.
Morrell lost his last battle against David Banavidez through a competitive unanimous 12 -round decision on February 1st. Benavidez seems to be too proficient for Morrell, who made many critical errors with his battle strategy. With Morrell’s power and athletics, he had the tools to win the fight, but he did not use the right approach.
It is doubtful that Smith could take the punishment that Morrell issued against Benavidez without folding. He hit harder than Artur Betterbiev, and we saw what he did to Callum.
