The Australian Grand Prix Corporation has been in ‘fraught negotiations’ for months over the future of Phillip Island in MotoGP. It is understood the Victorian Government has stepped up its ‘financial provision’ to keep the historic district on the calendar.

Officials are ‘stressful’ about the ‘substantial improvements’ needed to host the tournament at Albert Park. The track should have more running areas in the name of driver safety on the street circuit.

The situation prompted the South Australian government to hold ‘confidential’ talks with Dorna about a possible Adelaide street circuit race. The negotiations are ‘confidential’, but the main priority is to stay on Phillip Island.

Adelaide hosted the Formula 1 race from 1985 to 1995.

The Adelaide street circuit is most famous for the Formula 1 race between 1985 and 1995.

It was a popular race for fans and drivers, especially the legendary driver Ayrton Senna. The Brazilian won the Adelaide GP twice in 1991 and 1993, the second of these victories being his last in F1.

Dorna and Liberty are well aware that should MotoGP make a street circuit, appropriate measures must be taken. The track must be safe for riders as hitting a wall with no runway is a recipe for disaster.

MotoGP fans say ‘we’re out’ if Liberty introduces road circuits to the calendar. Phillip Island’s exit from MotoGP looks unlikely.
