The notion of a European Super League reared its ugly head again recently, with Stan Collymore suggesting a Doomsday scenario will occur when it goes ahead.
A year ago the The Super League seemed doomed to failurei Gary Neville was a high-profile ex-player to reject the idea of his creation.
However, the Unify League is the new concept that A22 organizers are now pushingand expert Stan Collymore believes there is a sense of inevitability about the project.
Whether this would mean the end of the Premier League as we know it is a moot point at present, although there is some certainty that other leagues will fall by the wayside.
The Superliga is inevitable
“I think the whole idea of Super League was and is absurd, especially if it becomes an invitation-only kind of tournament,” Collymore told CaughtOffside for his exclusive column.
“Be in the news again and you can see what will happen.
“The way FIFA has been populating the Club World Cup is a good example. He managed to get Lionel Messi up there despite no real sporting merit from his Inter Miami side, other than a second tier League Cup or whatever.
“You can see any Super League organizer doing exactly the same to make sure the usual suspects are in there, ignoring the likes of Nottingham Forest who absolutely deserve a place in form this season.
“It is ironic that Forest could qualify for the Champions League this season if they continue in the same way in the second half of the campaign, but would not qualify for an opening Super League tournament.
“As absurd as it is, the Superliga is inevitable and it will happen.”
In reality, if the fans and clubs don’t want the Super League to happen, then quite simply, like they did last time, they need to rally against it and put it to bed once and for all.
It seems that both Barcelona and Real Madrid are the only two European giants that remain ‘all in’ with the project, so it may still take a few years for it to become a reality.
At this point, however, Collymore believes football as we know it will be over.
