Proper reading in every stroke is important. So is calling at the right speed, which, sometimes, has more to do with your success in greens than sloping.
Here is a fun way to make your rolls while challenging yourself at the same time. I call it “five tee training”. Find a flat part in Practice the placement of green and put a tee three steps from the hole. Then two more steps beyond that. Then three more, each two steps from the last. Finally, discard a club or adhesive three meters in front of the hole. Now go to work. (Go down for a picture of what it should look like.)
Starting from the nearest tee, roll three strokes. Your goal is not to make each (but, if you do, excellent), but rather get each blow to finish in the cup or pass the hole – but not hit the stick. You need three successful efforts at each “station” before you can switch to the most remote TeE. If you go short or hit the barrier, start again. And you need to finish the test in 15 minutes.
Every golf can hit a stroke at the right speed once, but when you get well you do it three times in a row from different distances, you will always be around the cup.
