Tuesday in the final qualification for the 2025 open championship, Liv Pro Sam Horsfield left the course after fighting through nine holes. R&A disqualified the pros for his actions.
Horsfield was only disqualified because he failed to report his withdrawal from the event, leaving the course without warning tour officials.
But on Tuesday night, Horsfield broke his silence to explain the reasons for his walk, which included a late arrival from last week’s Liv event, a late night fire alarm and a telephone alarm that failed to wake him up.
Sam Horsfield explains open qualification DQ
Horsfield was one of the 14 Liv Golf players who entered one of the last four qualification events for the open championship on Tuesday. He played the West Lancashire Golf Club event in England, where only the top 5 places in a field of 72 players would win open points after a 36 -hole marathon.

But Horsfield lasted only nine of those holes, walking out of the course with a seven-on-43 score.
Tuesday evening Horsfield posted a long explanation for his actions In a story on InstagramOverlapped on a post on social media @nuclrgolf about his DQ.
In his message, Horsfield explained that he arrived at Heathrow Airport at 4am with local time on Monday before going to West Lancashire, finally falling asleep around 11:00 for an awakening 6am.
But Horsfield claimed that a fire alarm was extinguished at 1am in the morning, and he was forced to “stay out for an hour or so”. He said he did not fall asleep until 5:30 am after the fire alarm, then sleeping through his alarm 6 in the morning before he woke up from his caddy.
The whole issue La Horsfield “completely dizzying and out of it all day,” leading to his poor game and his eventual walk.
You can read the full text of the explanation on Horsfield’s Instagram below.
“So I flew back home on Sunday at night and went down to Heathrow at 4pm until I got up in West Lancs was almost late. I had a little dinner and fell asleep at 1030/11. In 1 morning the fire alarm left and we had to go for propaganda against Livi players from some of these pages.
While Horsfield added a message that denounced “propaganda there for the players (LIV)”, he did not explain why he retired without telling officials running the open qualification event in West Lancashire.
