As India prepares for the much awaited event Pink ball test Discussions are heating up over potential changes to the playing XI against Australia at the Adelaide Oval from 6 December 2024. After a convincing win in the first Test, India are likely to make strategic adjustments to improve their chances of success in this tough format.
The Rohit Sharma-led Indian side had a remarkable win against the Prime Minister’s XI in the recently concluded warm-up match, giving them considerable confidence ahead of the Day-Night Test in Adelaide.
Here are the three changes the Indians could make to their playing XI:
1. Rohit Sharma bats in the middle order
captain Rohit SharmaMissing the first Test due to the birth of her child, is set to lead the Indian team in the Adelaide Test. However, instead of opening, he could potentially be at No. 5. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal continuing the successful opening partnership. Rohit will replace Dhruv Jurel, who was brilliant in the practice games against Australia A but failed to add many runs to the Indian team’s total in the opening Test in Perth. Meanwhile, Rohit’s experience in the middle order can provide stability against Australia’s powerful bowling attack, especially in pink-ball conditions where batting can be difficult.

2. Shubman Gill takes over his usual number. 3 positions
Rohit, possibly moving down the order, Shubman Gill is preparing to return from injury and enter the decisive game No. 3 position. Gill’s long-range ability and recent form make him an ideal candidate for the role. He will replace Devdutt Padikkalwho struggled in the Perth Test and thereby strengthened India’s batting against a strong bowling attack.
3. Ravindra Jadeja for Washington Sundar
Another expected change is the inclusion of an all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja instead of Washington Sundar. Jadeja’s exceptional fielding, experience and ability to contribute with both bat and ball make him a valuable asset in pink-ball Tests, where conditions can favor the spinners in the later stages of the match. His return will also strengthen India’s spin options jasprit bumrah and Muhammad Siraj in the pace department.
