Devin Haney has killed off his chance for a rematch with Ryan Garcia by suing him, and if he doesn’t retire, he’ll have limited options for his next fight.
The big paydays Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) wants aren’t there without him avenging his loss to Ryan, and that opportunity has now gone out the window with his decision to start a lawsuit against him. He needs to avenge his loss, but he can no longer do so because of his decision to sue.
Before the lawsuit, Garcia expressed interest in giving Haney a rematch to give him the chance for a comeback, but no more. Ryan took to social media last night to shut down the possibility of Haney getting a lucrative rematch against him by saying it wasn’t happening because of his lawsuit.
Haney’s market value seems to have dropped, as we saw with the low purse bid of $2.24 million for his title defense against his WBC light welterweight mandatory Sandor Martin.
Devin chose not to agree to that fight due to the minuscule bid won by Top Rank, and he was made ‘Champion in Retirement’ with the WBC.
If Haney chooses to continue his career, he will likely have to move up to welterweight because he is too big to compete in the 140-lb division. His disastrous performance against Ryan on April 20 may have been partly the result of losing weight.
For fighters like Haney, who repeatedly drop massive amounts of weight to compete in a division well below their size, something has to give eventually.
Haney’s options at 147
– Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis
– Mario Barrios
– Brian Norman Jr.
– Conor Benn
– Eimantas Stanionis
These are all tough fights for Haney and ones he could lose. It wouldn’t be wise for Haney to mess with Boots because that would be a step too far for him. If promoter Eddie Hearn is interested in paying Haney well to fight Conor Benn, this would be an excellent fight for him and a winnable one.
Benn’s Superman powers have disappeared in his last two fights, and he now looks the mortal he was before his sudden rise several years ago. Haney will have a good chance to beat Benn if Hearn is willing to pay big money to make it happen. Hearn might want to save Benn for Chris Eubank Jr. because that match will end up being a big one in the UK.

I’m so over this Haney fight but they keep bugging me and talking about it
I’m ready for bigger things
Leave me alone, I’m done beating your ass
Nothing else to prove
