Devin Haney says he was just as surprised as everyone else through the NO Knockdown call in the ninth round of the Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’ fight against Lamont Roach last Saturday night in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Haney said he had never seen such a thing before when WBA lightweight champion Tank Davis (30-0-1, 28 COs) took a knee in ninth. Referee Steve Willis chose not to achieve it as a knockout. He even let the tank run to his corner to take his eyes off towel.
The NO Knockdown allowed the tank to escape with a majority score of 12 round. So he remained the WBA champion, and Roach had nothing to show for his performance.
“I always knew that Lamont wasn’t going to lie down. I have known Lamont since we were children. So we came up together by the amateurs, ”Devin Haney said Ring magazinethinking about the Gevonta Davis against Lamont Roach match of last Saturday night.
“I knew that Lamont was serious and came in to fight, but I thought he was far better than I thought. I thought he won the battle. The no -knock, it was unheard of. This is the first time I’ve ever seen my own two eyes, ‘Haney says of Tank Davis taking a knee in ninth place and the referee doesn’t call it a knockout.
Many people believe that if Lamont Roach took a knee and then walked back to his corner, the referee would have counted it as a knockout and then blew off the fight. He is not a superstar like Tank Davis, so he won’t get the special treatment that gets stars.
The referee did start giving an eight score, but stopped for some reason. It was strange. Roach feels that it must have been a knockout, which would have given him victory. He has since called on the New York State Athletic Commission in the hope that they will change the result to give him victory. Surprisingly, they take a long time to decide.
