Devin Haney will fight on March 25th on BLK Prime. The streaming service posted a tweet letting its followers know that Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) will fight next on BLK Prime. This suggests that it will be a PPV.
Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Where is Turki Al-Shiekh to help it falling star in this low period? He is really plumbing the depths. That loss to Kingry hit Devin harder than I thought.
Haney is not a pay-per-draw and will need to face someone who needs to be eye-catching to generate a decent number of buys. He will come off an 11-month layoff, and it will be risky for him to fight a top contender or a world champion at 140 or 147.
It’s a move that will further confirm the belief that Haney’s career is over and he’s just playing out his rope. He’ll obviously still try to get the rematch with Ryan Garcia, but if that doesn’t happen, he could end up fading into obscurity.
BLK Prime Return
Boxing fans on social media are mocking the news of Haney fighting on BLK Prime as it is a step back for him from his fights on DAZN and ESPN. He probably won’t be seen by many people fighting on BLK Prime unless the event draws a lot of interest.
It’s a big drop for Haney, who lost a 12-round majority decision to Ryan Garcia on April 20 last year, and hasn’t fought since. Devin’s stock fell dramatically from that defeat and his subsequent decision to sue Ryan for battery, fraud and breach of contract.
It’s unclear if this is going to be a long-term situation for Haney or just a one-off fight on BLK Prime. If he loses the fight, he might as well stay because his chances of fighting on a major network will be slim. Ryan Garcia won’t need a rematch with Haney, 26, if he loses to a tomato can.
It will be interesting to know if Devin’s father, Bill Haney, is behind his decision to fight on BLK Prime. If Bill Dev wants to keep Dev on this streaming service for the rest of his career, he will be invisible to many fans. It may not matter if Haney is unable to beat top opposition. He would be one of the undesirables.
Terence Crawford fought David Avanesyan on December 10, 2022 at BLK Prime. The fight was rumored to have done poorly on PPV, but it was the only time Crawford fought on that network.
Two years ago, former four-division world champion Adrien Broner was supposed to fight Ivan Redkach at BLK Prime, but the bout was canceled and never took place. This is another fight that probably would have produced poor PPV numbers.
