Next week marks the eighth edition of the Laver Cup – and the first to be staged in San Francisco. The annual showdown between Team Europe and Team World will take place in Chase Center from September 19-21, with Europe holding a 5-2 advantage in the series of all time.
Team World looks much different behind the late Withrawals to Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul Frances Tiefoe.
Their replacement will be Alex Michelsen, Reilly Opelka and Alex de Minaur.
The world team has added world No.8 Alex de Minaur instead of Frances Tiefoe (No.29).
“We will lack the energy and game of France in San Francisco,” said world team captain Andre Agassi. “However, we can no longer be excited to add one of the best and most shaped players in the world to our team. I have admired the way Alex plays and races from afar and now I look forward to having a first row to see him perform.”
De Minaur, the Australian highest rank player, had initially been unavailable due to the opening -US travel plans, but accepted the late call from Agassi and Vice President Pat Rafter. A quarter-finalist in six of the last eight groups of the Grand Slams, including this year’s Australian Open and US Open, the 25-year-old has collected 10 titles of ATP Tour’s bachelors, highlighted by his triumph at the ATP 500 of this year in Washington.
“Next to join Captain Agassi and the team of the team in San Francisco next week,” De Mineur said. “My first Laver Cup in London in 2022 was a tremendous experience and I will be willing to give everything I have to help the team raise the Laver Cup in Chase Center.”
Team Europe Eded Team World 13-11 last year in Berlin, but Team World claimed two publications before this, in Vancouver (2023) and London (2022). Europe dominated the first four competitions, winning in Prague (2017), Chicago (2018), Geneva (2019) and Boston (2021).
