Frank Martin and Edwin De Los Santos are negotiating for a fight on March 29 for the undercard of Sebastian Fundora vs. Errol Spence at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The weight for the Martin vs. De Los Santos fight could be 135 or 140.
Fight In The Works
Fernando Sabatini reports that the Martin-De Los Santos fight is in negotiation. If made, it will be the first fight for De Los Santos (16-2, 14 KOs) since his 12-round unanimous decision loss on November 16, 2023 in Las Vegas. It was a fight for the vacant WBC lightweight title. Shakur made it really ugly with his movement and clinched.
The fans at the T-Mobile Arena that night booed both fighters from the fourth round on and continued to see Shakur while being questioned inside the ring after the fight. He was the one who made it boring for the Las Vegas fans, who have little patience with runners.
That fight should have been scored as a draw or a win for Edwin as he landed all the significant blows in the match. Shakur just ran and held on.
‘The Ghost’ Martin (18-1, 12 KOs) is coming off an eighth-round knockout loss to WBA lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis on June 15, 2024. Martin was trailing with scores of 67 at the time of the knockout -66, 67-66 and 67-66.
If the fight happens, De Los Santos will have to be a heavy favorite to knock out Martin as he has the hand speed and punching power advantage. Martin looked bad in his fight against Artem Harutyunyan on July 15, 2023, and he had to rally to win that fight by a 12-round unanimous decision in the championship rounds.
14 months too long?
For Martin and De Los Santos, this is an important fight as they both need a win to stay in the hunt for a world title. De Los Santos has been out of the ring for 14 months since his loss to Shakur. He should have been back a long time ago.
“I have confirmed that Edwin De Los Santos and Frank Martin are in negotiations for a possible fight on March 29th at the MGM in Las Vegas as part of the event on Fundora-Spence (card). It could be 135 or 140 pounds,” Fernando Sabatini said X.
