Oscar de la Hoya says Canelo Alvarez should fire coach Eddy Reynoso and start with a new coach “Teach him new tricks ” After his loss of Terence Crawford on September 13.
De la Hoya mentions that Canelo (63-3-2, 39 COs) still has the reflexes and the power to be a fighter at elite level to continue his career at the top for at least three more fights.
A deeper problem than coaching
I disagree. These are the reasons why I believe that a new coach with Canelo will fail:
- Style too complicated
- Age
- Wear
- Mentally discouraged after loss
- Lack of hunger due to wealth
‘Get a new coach. You will do better. ‘ A new coach will teach you new tricks, ‘the promoter Oscar de la Hoya told the media About him who wants Canelo Alvarez to fire his longtime coach Eddy Reynoso after his loss of Terence Crawford.
The persistent cardio problems
It would be a sign of desperation for Canelo if he were to dump his longtime coach Eddy Reynoso at this point. Regardless of who trains him, Canelo will still have heart problems he showed during his career, especially since 2022.
If an old guy like Terence Crawford can beat Canelo, just think what the young fighters he apparently avoided could do to him. Crawford did not do much of anything about offense. He did not give a brilliant performance to beat Canelo.
Crawford looked old, weak and almost as vulnerable. Canelo was a little worse, which enabled Crawford to win a close unanimous decision of 12 round by the scores 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112. Canelo’s last opponent, William Scull, said this week that if he did a little more, he would have beat Alvarez too. He would have.
In terms of power, speed and physical ability, Scull looked better than Crawford. He just didn’t use his excellent ability enough. The other Top Super -Middleweights would have been a nightmare for Canelo if he fought Osleys Iglesias, Christian Mbilli, Lester Martinez and Diego Pacheco. A new coach is not going to save Canelo from those fighters if he shows the bravery to fight with one of them.
“With his strength and reflexes, he still has a chance to fight a few more fights with the elite. He would revive his style and make him a new fighter,” De la Hoya said about what Floyd Mayweather Sr. for Canelo can do.
Signs of physical decline
Even though Canelo was open to the idea of dumping Reynoso, Mayweather Sr. couldn’t do much to renovate his style to bring back the fighter he was years ago. It is the age and a long career ring that apparently took away the best part of his game.
De la Hoya did not mention last year that Canelo’s changed physical appearance has changed. He seems to have lost muscle and does not look like in the past. He has a rinsed look like someone who has lost weight or has to do with inactivity, causing atrophy. However, he was active, so he shouldn’t look like that.
