De La Hoya hints Schofield WILL NOT fight Shakur Stevenson in February

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya hinted today that Floyd Schofield will NOT fight WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson on February 22nd. De La Hoya says Hearn can’t get “Lower” by picking “prospect” Schofield as the opponent for Shakur, who is fighting his first fight with Matchroom after recently signing with them.

“Lower Than Low”

In this week’s Clap Back Thursday post, De La Hoya slammed Shakur’s Matchroom promoter, Eddie Hear, for wanting to use his fighter, 22-year-old prospect Kid Austin Schofield, as the opponent for his next fight in February.

Although De La Hoya won’t come right out and say it, it sounds like he is NOT going to sign off on his fighter, Schofield, who is being used as Shakur’s next challenger.

Shakur Stevenson takes the bad news pretty hard, crying about it on X, knowing he lost on an easy meal.

You can’t blame De La Hoya for that because Shakur picks Schofield is a opportunistically move, to take advantage of an inexperienced fighter rather than someone older, more experienced, and a real threat to him. Shakur is like a raptor looking for vulnerable food on the ground.

Why not one of these fighters?

– Andy Cruz
– Edwin De Los Santos
– Keyshawn Davis
– Raymond Muratalla
– Frank Martin
– Abdullah Mason

De La Hoya pointed out that Hearn could have targeted Raymond Muratalla or Frank Martin as Stevenson’s next foe after William Zepeda was ruled out due to an injured left hand suffered in his last against Tevin Farmer on November 16.

Oscar says this is an example of Hearn not knowing how to build fighters as he tries to use the “prospect” Schofield rather than a more seasoned fighter as Shakur’s February 22nd opponent.

Schofield out?

“Shakur Stevenson vs. William Zepeda was set to happen until William injured his hand fighting Tevin Farmer last weekend,” Oscar De La Hoya wrote on his Clap back Thursdays this week talking about WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson wanting to fight 22-year-old Floyd Schofield on February 22 rather than an older, more experienced fighter.

“So, you’d naturally think Shakur would start targeting a Frank Martin or Muratalla, another world champion, wouldn’t you? No, Shakur and ‘Lonesome Eddie (Hearn) made an offer to my 22-year-old prospect Kid Austin, who has no world championship experience,” De La Hoya said. “That’s exactly what I mean when I say Eddie doesn’t know how to build a career.

“Look, Bob Arum built Shakur Stevenson to become a world champion, and in your first fight with Matchroom, you actually want to put him against a prospect, Eddie? I didn’t think it could get any lower for you, but it does.”
