David Morrell acknowledged last Saturday after his controversial ten-round victory over Imam Khataev (10-1, 9 COs) that it was not a ‘best performance for everyone’ at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.
Light heavyweight contender Morrell (12-1, 9 COs) says he listened to his coach in the corner and had no answers as to why he could have been an easy battle in a difficult one against the Russian Khataev (10-1, 9 COs). The fans on social media felt overwhelming that Khatav deserves victory.
Who won Morrell Khataev?
The judges’ scores were 95-94 for Khataev, 96-93 and 95-94 for Morrell.

It was a strange struggle. Morrell injured Khataev’s body in fifth place, and then he started coming around. It was Khataev’s last rabbit, while Morrell took control of the fight from there.
Morrell stood in front of Khataev regularly, just to cover and take him down, was hard to understand. This is the type of opponent Khataev is good at, guys who go into sparring partner mode. Morrell should have known better with his amateur background.
Why Morrell’s actions disappointed?
In the ninth and tenth rounds, Morrell opened with a barrage of bumps that hurt Khatav. In such cases, Morrell supported and, instead of going to the finish, covered. He allowed Khataev to survive. In the last 20 seconds of the tithing, Morrell injured Khatav with a large leftist who tangled him. Again, he lets him off the hook. There was no killer instinct there.
Morrell did not say who he plans to fight next. When asked, he said he was going on holiday. Fans want to see a re -broadcast with Khataev, but it’s unlikely without Turki Alalshikh wanting it. Morrell’s actions have shown that he is not ready to fight the bigger names, Dmitri Biscol or Artur Betterbiev. Morrell is not consistent enough with his offense to compete against the fighters. Morrell’s habit of stopping behind his high guard would lead him to lose to both fighters.
