Danny Rose has revealed Tottenham Hotspur players used to be “laughed at” by England team-mates over their wages.
Rose recently summoned an impressive career that saw him play 214 times for Spurs in all competitions, as well as representing Sunderland, Newcastle and Watford.
Of course, Rose was also a regular for England between 2014 and 2019, when he was among the best left-backs in the Premier League, playing at Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup with the Three Lions.
However, despite his high standing in the game at the time, Rose made it clear during a training camp in England that he and his Tottenham team-mates were not being paid at the same level as other Three Lions stars .
This was the source of much amusement for Rose’s international colleagues.
Rose reveals Tottenham stars taunted England team-mates over wages
“When we leave with England, the boys laugh at us for what they pay us. And I have a friend who was at another club,” Rose said on the In The Zone podcast (via Football. London).
“I remember one season when West Brom were fighting relegation while we were close and some of their players were on more than we were. That wasn’t right. With Spurs and bonuses to win, you had to win by at least one couple of goals to get a bonus.
“At the time, I don’t regret saying anything because it was the truth, but now I think they’re being paid appropriately.”
