The South of England Inter-County and Masters Champs took place in Greenford last weekend.
SOUTH OF ENGLAND INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, Greenford, November 29.
The event, held in conjunction with the Southern Masters Championship, is back on the calendar after being forced to cancel last year due to suspected bad weather on Oxford’s challenging Shotover course.
Horsendon Hill was commissioned this year and was the youngest maiden. the race, which was the first of the away race, and Madison Kindler continued her recent undefeated run. However, despite having three in the top six, his Essex back four lost out to hosts Middlesex in the team stakes.
Traditionally, the event does not have a senior men’s championship, so the senior focus was on the women.
There, Kate O’Neill, who finished sixth in the cross-country, had the biggest win of the meeting, by 35 seconds over Kent’s Phoebe Barker.
The under-20 women ran alongside their older sisters, with Anna May Bloomfield finishing fourth overall, but her circuit could do no better than another fourth behind Kent.
Joseph Skanes had a good autumn and completed his final performances here, which included the fastest lap in the Mansfield relay, with a solid U17 win over Kent team-mate Freddie Gibson, and the team was theirs too.
In the women’s under 17 race, the top two were far and away and it was Molly Smithers who narrowly edged out Kent’s Sophie Richmond as she guided Middlesex to the team title.
Elsewhere in the youth race, Summer Smith gave Essex a second win for the girls, adding the girls’ under-15 event, while Byron Roberts led Sussex to the boys’ under-15 team title.
One of the closest races was in the under-13 boys’ competition, where hosts Luca da Silva just replaced Eddie Shawcross-Campbell and Zac Evans to beat Middlesex.

SOUTH OF ENGLAND MASTERS, Greenford, November 29
The men’s event, held in conjunction with the regional cross-country championships, saw victory for Brighton’s Zared Arasaretnam-Hale in the youngest men’s age group, which included men aged 40-49, as all men’s age groups ran together.
Teammate Howard Bristow finished third to take M50 gold, while further back Colin Ridley and Paul Spouage led Colchester Harriers to M60 team gold.
The Women’s Masters was for the over 40s and it was South West Cross Country Masters champion Erin Wilmers who powered her Winchester Running Club trio to W40 team gold.
This was ahead of the Stragglers pair of Nick Douglas and leading W50 Sophie Biggs, while their club scored well in the over-60s and where their Pam McHutchon won W65 gold, but no prizes were awarded in either the men’s or women’s over-70 races.
