“He’s really good,” Fritz said after losing 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (4). “I played him on his 18th birthday in Open. Of course he has improved a lot since that time. I think he has improved naturally, like almost everything in his game has improved. When you are young like him, you will simply improve.”

Fritz had a lot of problems making a way out against the menic service. He was once divided into the middle set, but that was everything he could manage against the teenager.

“Service is a massive improvement,” Fritz said. “I played it at US Open in ’23. He had a great service, but he didn’t put him so well. I was able to be alone in his service all the time. It was great, but he didn’t hit the points.”

Fritz said the location of the menic service point was what made such a problem to fight. He added that the assumption may have been his greatest chance.

“The point that served today was crazy,” Fritz said. “I really should have started to guess and choose one side more often instead of trying to react and use my extension as I do normally. I felt as if he lost the service or he hit him within an inch or two of the line. I really should have just started thinking.”
