Long, straight swings only happen when you catch the ball in the sweet spot and move slightly in and out as you approach the shot. The problem is that most rec players move slightly (or extremely) off-to-on (as in to the left of the target). A visual aid can help.
Place a yoga block (or any soft brick-shaped object) about an inch outside the ball after you’ve tired. Use the block as a guide to guide your club in the correct downswing path. If you tend to swing too steep or cut the ball, you’ll hit the block – not good.
Take a few practice swings in slow motion to start, missing the block each time, then go after it at full speed. When you repeatedly miss the block, you’ll see your drives climb farther while avoiding slices and pop-ups. It’s an easy workout, but it works like a charm every time.
