Conor Benn’s decision to ditch Eddie Hearn and take a 150-pound catchweight bout with Regis Prograis renews attention on the Jaron Ennis bout that never got done.
When Benn and Ennis were represented by the same promoter, the structural complications that often delay big fights were not present. There were no separate promotional companies involved and no competing broadcast deals to resolve. Both fighters were 29 during that period. Ennis had a shot at the welterweight title, while Benn sought higher-level opposition in or around the division.
Instead, Benn’s bout is scheduled for April 11 in London against Prograis, a former junior welterweight champion who is 1-2 in his last three fights and will move up ten pounds to compete at 150. Prograis established his career at 140 pounds and has not recently competed against welterweight or premier title holders in that division. The competition is set at a catchweight rather than within the formal championship framework at 147.
Stephen Edwards referred directly to the internal option. “You don’t have to go through a lawsuit if you have an old right in your stable,” he told MillCity Boxing. “This is the perfect opponent for you.”
Ennis has been chasing a decisive opponent since consolidating his position near the top of the welterweight division. Benn’s highest-profile bout came against Chris Eubank Jr., then 35, a fight that generated significant commercial interest but did not establish Benn’s placement within a single weight class. Eubank’s recent victories have largely come outside the central championship picture at middleweight.
Benn’s move to Zuffa Boxing changes the promotion’s alignment. If a fight with Ennis is contemplated in the future, it will require negotiation on separate platforms. The circumstances that once placed both fighters under the same structure no longer apply.
The Prograis match could expand Benn’s visibility under a new banner. This does not determine his standing among the leading welterweights.
Until Benn faces one of the division’s top welterweights, the doubt about where he stands will not go away.
