Clap to doubters or silverboard?

Terence Crawford says his victory over Canelo Alvarez was a ‘slap in the face’ of promoters who doubt his ability to do things.

Crawford (42-0, 31 COs) does not say who these promoters were who doubted him, because three notable, Eddie Hearn, Bob Arum and Oscar de la Hoya, all chose him to beat Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) in Las Vegas on September 13.

Canelo’s decline was clear to everyone

They saw what fans had: that Canelo, 35, showed signs of aging, seemed less explosive, did not score in four years since 2021, and struggled against these fighters: William Scull, Edgar Berlanga, Jaime Munguia, John Ryder, Gennadiy Golovkin (Tilogy) and Dmitry Bivolol.

Crawford, 38, mentions that he showed them what he could “achieve” by doing something that had never been done before. He did not say what he meant by that, because fighters won section titles in five weight classes.

So his victory over Canelo was not historical. Other fighters have won world titles in six and eight divisions. The historical thing Crawford did was become a world champion of three divisions by collecting four belts at 140, 147 and 168.

However, the performance of Crawford is less impressive when one considers the fighters he defeated to win the titles. Winning the belts for the sake of doing it just shows that sections are watered down due to the four sanctions bodies, which means that fewer fighters can be kept in world titles.

If Crawford wanted to prove something to promoters, why would he not fight against Benavidez? Why didn’t Crawford move up to 168 to face him when he held the WBC Super Middeeight title? Why did he wait until Canelo kept those belts to fight for the titles?
