Oakmont Country Club, in Oakmont, Pa., Was founded in 1903 by Henry C. Fowns, who also designed it. In the early 1900s, there were six individual bunkers that divided the 3rd and 4th alleys, but between the opening of the US 1927 and 1935, they tied the outside to give them church pews.
They have continued to evolve slowly since then.
Another Pew was added to Bunker after US Open of 1962 and four others were added before US Open 2007. Before US Open of this year (Oakmont’s 10th record), Gil Hanse led a course restoration, and Church Pew Bunker was not spared. They lasted it with about 15 yards and added another noodle to prevent players from hitting the discs on it while playing par-4 3.
Now the Pew Bunker church covers over 26,000 meters, is 102 yards tall and 42 yards wide (and holds more than 550 tons of sand). Pews (13 of them) are about three meters long, though the maintenance team tries to keep the grass thinner and gentle for members. This week, you will see a denser version.
“We really turned them into the way they looked in the Fowns era, where there are some changes and rise of the church pews,” golf.com Mike Mike Mike McCormick, superintendent of Head’s Oakmont. “You can land in the sand and have a large mound in front of you, or you may have a more shallow mound in front of you.”
