Chelsea consider the defender’s surprise exit following Wesley Fofana’s injury

Chelsea are reportedly considering offloading centre-back Trevoh Chalobah loan with Crystal Palace to help their defensive problems.

Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana have been sidelined with long-term injuries, although the latter has questioned the public belief of manager Enzo Maresca which could be down for the whole season.

Maresca’s limited options made him turn to 18-year-old Josh Acheampong, who dazzled against one side of the Palace unable to present Chalobah at the weekend.

It had previously been stated that ChelseaThe loan deal with Palace does not include a break clause, however The Athletic now suggests otherwise and claim the Blues are considering bringing Chalobah back this month.

Chelsea have already done it he brought in summer signing Aaron Anselmino from his loan with Boca Juniors to strengthen at the back and could do the same with Chalobah, who has caught the eye with Oliver Glasner in south London this season.

Key to the Blues’ thinking could be Chalobah’s versatility. While a natural centre-back, the 25-year-old has plenty of experience on both the right-hand side of defense and in midfield, meaning he could play a number of roles in Maresca’s fluid set-up.

Bringing Chalobah back to Stamford Bridge would be important as was the academy graduate frozen out of the squad during the preseason as part of a plan to sell him at a profit under pressure from PSR, stripping him of his squad number and sending him to train with the infamous ‘bomb squad’, before a loan at Palace loomed at the end of the summer transfer window.

This decision had real controversy, especially because of Chalobah’s attachment to the club. The 25-year-old featured heavily in the second half of last season under former manager Mauricio Pochettino and was a key part of Chelsea’s rise from 11th to sixth in the table.

Chelsea signed Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer in the summer and the former Fulham man, alongside Axel Disasi, pushed Chalobah down the pecking order before Palace offered him the chance to restart his career.
