Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is booked again despite years of losses, inactivity and problems outside the ring, with a new fight set for April 25 in Mexico.
The former WBC middleweight titleholder will face Jhon Caicedo on that date at the Estadio Adolfo Lopez Mateos in Reynosa, as confirmed on Wednesday. The booking marks Chavez’s second appearance of 2026, following a fourth-round stoppage of Angel Sacco in January, a fight that came after a long gap in activity.
Chavez (55-7-1, 35 KOs) has gone 9-7 since 2012 and hasn’t recorded a win of note during that time. His most recent high-profile outing ended in a clear decision loss to Jake Paul in June, a cruiserweight fight where Chavez struggled to compete over the distance. His career trajectory has steadily declined since moving up from middleweight, where he previously had a size advantage over much of his opposition.
Caicedo (13-1, 5 KOs), a 21-year-old from Colombia, enters the fight off a third-round knockout loss to Avni Yildirim last June in Turkey. He has not fought since that loss and has yet to face a recognized contender.
Chavez, 40, is now based in Mexico after he was arrested last July near his home in Los Angeles for overstaying his visa and allegedly providing false information on a green card application. He was deported in August and released from custody awaiting further legal action linked to the case. The US Department of Homeland Security previously stated that Chavez had an active warrant in Mexico related to alleged involvement in organized crime and firearms trafficking.
The April 25 fight is progressing under sanctioning approval, adding another fight to Chavez’s schedule despite a record and situation that would normally limit opportunities at this level.
