Rory Mcilroy did not go looking for a new golf ball, but sometimes the difference finds you.
The Great Champion four times passed from Taylormade TP5X to TP5 for AT&T Pebble Beach pro-am. Early returns were positive during the first round of Thursday when Mcilroy scored a 66 under 66 years old in the Spyglass Hill Golf Club. Opening 66 included Mcilroy’s career of second-in-one career in PGA Tour. According to Golf data, Mcilroy won 2.27 strokes in access and 1.65 outside Tee during the first round.
After the round, Mcilroy revealed how the equipment change happened.
“I stumbled upon,” Mcilroy said on Thursday. “I was getting confused in Grove another day. This should be like Thursday last week. As soon as I started hitting some TP5 chips instead of TP5X, and I really liked how I felt. I I had not really tested TP5 of 2024, but I liked how he was reacting around the greens. Lower but more spinner.
“Then I just did some tests with it and compared it to TP5X. I used a TP5 2019, and the difference between a TP5 2019 and a TP5X 2019 was a lot in terms of rotation and start angles. This seems to start probably A lower degree for me, but the rolling rate is very similar, I like it very much. Golf with lower compression. I played here today and it was really good.
Adding TP5 is just a reason that Mcilroy enters the season feeling sharper than the one in the past at the beginning of the season.
In October, Northern Irish spent three weeks in an imitator to address some mistakes in his back. The stroke in the simulator allowed Mcilroy to focus on the movement of his body and his swinging and not worrying about his change to form his purpose.
This studio work, combined with more recreational golf in December and changing the ball, have Mcilroy feel ready to attack the early part of the PGA Tour season instead of using it to adjust its swing.
“I’m probably not looking so much,” Mcilroy said after his round. “I stayed very busy at that time October, where I did a lot of rhythm work. Then I also played a lot of Golf in December, which I usually don’t play, so I felt like this kept me a little sharper. Mostly is Golf Social, but I had a trip to Ohoopee, I had a member of the Grove, I had my journey to New Zealand, I played the confrontation in Vegas, so I was playing a lot of golf until December.
