Canelo’s team approaches William Scull for May title fight

IBF super middleweight champion William Scull revealed today that he has been approached by Canelo Alvarez’s team for an undisputed championship fight at 168 in May in Las Vegas.

If the fight against Cuban Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) goes ahead, WBA, WBC and WBO 168-lb champion Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) will have the opportunity to make a two-time undisputed champion.

Canelo calls

That likely won’t make Terence Crawford happy, as he was hoping to move up to 168 to challenge Canelo for his unified titles. However, that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen for Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs), and he’ll have to make other plans, such as fighting at 154 or retiring. Oh well, we don’t always get what we want.

With his net worth estimated at $250 millionCanelo is the one fighter Turki Al-Shiekh can’t persuade to take the fights he wants. Of course anything is possible. If Turki offers Canelo a cool $150 million to fight Crawford, he might be tempted by the sweet offer. Barring that happening, it is doubtful that Canelo will ever concede to Crawford as this is a no-win type of fight.

It doesn’t look good for Crawford with his dreams of fighting Canelo, but he probably won’t sit around and hope for that fight to happen.

If Crawford would just stay busy fighting regularly like everyday hard working people do, he wouldn’t need to push so hard for a golden parachute retirement fight against Canelo. He would make a lot of money from his other fights.

If Crawford moves up to 175, he could face David Benavidez and try to put himself in position to get a big payday fighting undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev. Crawford apparently spars with light heavyweights all the time.

Scull, 32, recently captured the vacant IBF title with a dubious 12-round unanimous decision victory over Vladimir Shishkin on October 19 at the Stadthalle, Falkensee, Germany. The scores were 116-113, 116-112 and 115-113. Many boxing fans felt that Shishkin did enough to deserve the win.

Scull’s Great Break

“William Scull confirms to the program Cubanos Punos that there is a rapprochement between his team and the #Canelo team for a possible unification confrontation next May in Las Vegas. Scull adds that there will be an official meeting between both teams on January 10 to finally agree on everything. Furthermore, the IBF Super-Middleweight World Champion makes it clear that Berlanga did exist as a possibility, as well as Christian Mbilli, who was ruled out for financial reasons,” Carlos Linares said.
