Canelo’s cherry pick exposed: Why Crawford’s immediate title shot undermines Boxing Fairness

Terence Crawford bypasses the top contenders in the Super Middeeight section who received an immediate title shot against the undisputed Super -Middelweight Champion Canelo Alvarez, which raises the demand for fairness and merit.

Canelo: Cunning Cherry-Picker?

Fighters like David Banavidez have long fought for a fight against Canelo, and were ignored despite the fight in the same section. For Crawford to get a fight against Canelo rather than benavidez, it looks bad.

You see Canelo as a cunning, calculated cherry picker. He avoids greater threats in favor of weaker, smaller and older fighters such as 37-year-old Crawford.

If boxing is a sport, fighters must earn the right to fight world champions. We do not see this here with Crawford (41-0, 31 COs) moving two weight classes to challenge Canelo (63-2-2, 39 COs).

Broner’s title parallel

Although Crawford moved through four divisions to conquer world titles, the opposition he fought to capture the titles was less than the best. He defeated Errol Spence on 147, but many people believe he was a shell from his former self when that fight took place.

In many ways, Terence’s four-division championships reflect that of Adrien ‘The problem’ Broner, who also won four-section titles against a similar opposition. AB has driven through weight classes to capture belts left and right in the same strategic way that Crawford did.

Bud’s undeserved “mega-fight”

Crawford mentions that he chose Canelo because he missed all the “mega-fighters” that Canelo got against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto and Gennadiy Golovkin. So it’s his ‘mega-fight’.

However, this does not mean that he deserves to get a mega battle because he is the one who chose to fight in the 135, 140 and 147 divisions, although most of his career, does not show ambition to move up and risk his unbeaten record against the fighters. Those fighters were still in their prime during a large part of Crawford’s career from 2008 to 2018.

Crawford’s opponents in the past

1. Lightweight (135)

2. Light Welterweight (140)

  • Thomas dorme for vacant wbo
  • Viktor Postol for WBC
  • Julius Indongo for IBF and WBA

3.. Welterweight (147)

  • Jeff Horn for WBO
  • Errol Spence for IBF, WBA and WBC

4. Junior middleweight (154)

If you look closely at the Fighters Crawford beat, his resume is mediocre, and not what naive fans believe it is. When they hear that Crawford is a former double -sided world champion and a world champion of four divisions, they think that means he beat big opposition. His plate does not show it. It reveals the opposite.

“I asked Canelo because he was a big fighter. He fought (Miguel) Cotto, (Floyd) Mayweather, GGG (Gennady Golovkin) … all the mega fighters. And that’s my mega-battle, it’s my moment, that’s why I asked Canelo face, ‘says Terence Crawford.
