Canelo Alvarez uses #1 WBA-approved middleweight contender Yoenli Hernandez, in addition to Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis as two of his sparring partners to prepare for his title defense of his undisputed super-middleweight championship against Terence Crawford on September 13.
Canelo’s sparring partners
Hernandez (8-0, 7 COs) was born in Cuba and won a gold medal at the 2021 AIBA World Boxing Championships. He completed his amateur career with a record of 61-12. Hernandez, 28, is a pressure fighter with heavy hands taking his opponents with power shots.
The use of Hernandez and ‘Boots’ Ennis as Sparring Partners is an indication of how serious Canelo (63-2-2, 39 COs) takes its fight against the smaller, older Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs). The 6’2 ″ Hernandez is a larger fighter and looks more powerful than the 5’9 ″ Crawford. For Canelo to use Hernandez, it points out that he plans to run down Terence and throw power shots to carry him out.
“If she (Crawford) legs gets tired and he stays there, will be Canelo (done). The only thing with Canelo is nowadays that his knees were not as before, ‘said coach Jose Banavidez Sr. Millcity Boxingand pointed out that 35-year-old Canelo Alvarez’s mobility deteriorated with the age of a long career in his title defense of his four 168-pound titles against Terence Crawford on September 13.
Canelo’s low punch statistics against William Scull earlier this year on May 3, 2025, was a red flag for fans and the media that he shows signs of decline at 35.
Canelo-Scull Punch Stats
- Canelo Alvarez: 56 strokes of 152 for 36.8%
- William Scull: 55 of 293 for 18.8%
The wear and tear of a career
Former coach Teddy atlas After the fight, he suspected that Canelo’s actions against Scull indicated that he could show signs of decline due to his age.
‘Canelo may be because of his age. You saw it in the Scull Fight – he wasn’t so aggressive, didn’t have the same fire. Maybe it’s motivation, maybe it’s wear and tear, ‘Atlas said on his YouTube channel.
‘Canelo had a lot of fights. He was carried a lot through training camps, and a lot of hard work and lots of fights. This is what happens to many fighters. They carry out in the gym, not in the battles. He is no longer the same for me. He does not throw combinations.
Canelo has been in the pro ranks since 2005. He fought these notable fighters in his long career:
Gennadiy Golovkin x 3
Floyd Mayweather jr.
Miguel cotto
Dmitri BIVOL
Daniel Jacobs
Callum Smith
Jermell Charlo
Caleb plant
Sergey Kovalev
Shane mosley
Edgar Berlanga
Jaime mungiaa
Erislandy Lara
Austin Trout
Of these names, Canelo only lost to Biful and Mayweather. However, he still took shots of those fighters in those attacks, and he was through tough training camps in preparation for his fighting during his career.
Is he still motivated?
“He can’t close the distance anymore. He can’t close the gaps. He cannot chase the people as he chased earlier and hurt them. I think he is no longer the same. I see nothing more special, no more than he used to be. He also threw an upper end, and he was also more aggressive. You, ”Benavidez Sr. said about Canelo.
Fans noted that Canelo did not show a sense of urgency to run off his last two opponents, William Scull and Edgar Berlanga, as he would if he fought against the fighters earlier in his career.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Canelo’s fortune is estimated at $ 300 million. Reports indicate that Alvarez’s wallet for the Crawford battle is $ 150 million. With that kind of fortune, it would be lacking in benavidez jr’s belief that Canelo did not have the same hunger and ambition as he once had because of his tremendous wealth.
