Canelo Alvarez has kept a low profile since suffering a surprise loss to Terence Crawford in September 2025. Alvarez lost his undisputed super middleweight title in that fight, prompting some fans to say he should retire.
Two weeks ago, Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) told El Azteca that he wanted a rematch with Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs). Nothing has been said since. Fans are torn down the middle, with many wanting to see Canelo go in a different direction to a different opponent.
Crawford’s price tag
They don’t see that a rematch is any different. Many of them felt that the Shakur-esque fighting style used by Crawford was incredibly boring, and not even worth the monthly subscription price for Netflix.
The Mexican star has clearly heard about Crawford’s $100 million demand for the rematch, and he’s going to want the perfect deal for himself before agreeing to a second fight. Canelo’s purse was last at $150 million.
While he probably won’t push for a similar or higher payment, he’ll certainly want at least $100 million, especially if Crawford is going to get that amount. Will Turki Alalshikh want to pay both these prima donnas $100 million after their lackluster performances?
If Canelo is offered much less than he was made in the first fight by Turki Alalshikh, he may choose to refuse out of pride. It would be too hard to accept his salary being cut in half, and to see Crawford get the lion’s share,
No B-side for Canelo
As the face of boxing, Canelo is not going to want to be the B-side, with the roles reversed and him getting the $50 million for the rematch. That’s what Crawford’s stance was last September, which was more than fair given the safety-first way he fought that night. He wasn’t going to take any risks. It was a close fight with Crawford winning by a 12-round unanimous decision with scores of 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112.
