Coach Greg Hackett doubts that Terence Crawford can knock out undisputed super -middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez on September 13. He has not yet seen the kind of power of the 38-Ish Crawford (41-0, 31 COs) suggesting that he could knock out a ‘bull’ like Canelo (63-2-2, 39 COs).
Crawford’s style won’t ko canelo
Hackett says that if it was the days of 15-round battles, he believes Crawford would knock Canelo out, but not fight in a twelve. Canelo is too difficult. Bud is not the type of fighter knocking out for a knockout like some of the fighters in other weight classes. He is more of the type who is satisfied to box out his opponents, win a decision, collect his salary and disappear for a year before fighting again.
“Canelo Alvarez is the type you had to kill. I’m not saying that Crawford doesn’t have the power to kill him, but to kill him, you have to have unlimited ammunition,” coach Greg Hackett said IceM Sports Media On whether Terence Crawford can be able to strike Canelo Alvarez on September 13.
It will take a big puncher to strike Canelo, and they must be willing to stand and trade. Crawford does not have the power or the willingness to stand in the trenches and fight Alvarez. He will box him as if he always does his opponents.
Crawford’s fight against Errol Spence was the only one in his career where he fought aggressively throughout, and that was because he fought against a drained shell. Spence lost a significant amount of weight to reach the 147 -pound limit for that battle, and looked limp and slow. He was also out of the ring for more than a year after his war against Yordenis Ugas in April 2022.
15 rounds vs. 12: Crawford Factor
“In the 15-round days, yes, because Bud is a 15-round fighter. But in the 12-round days, Nah, ‘Hackett said about Crawford who could beat Canelo in the old days in the early 1980s before the longer 15 round attacks were stopped. “Canelo won’t allow you to kill him. He is not the bull to go out that way. He is just one of the bulls he keeps in the barn. He destroyed many people. Maybe you can come over him, but strike him? Nah. ‘
Crawford did not show the aggressiveness in his fight against Israil Madrimov at 154 to have a chance to strike Canelo. He only started putting it on Madrimov in the 10th, and even then it was just because he would become passive. Canelo will still be too dangerous for Crawford to fight as he did against Madrimov. He takes it in and hits him with top extracts. He couldn’t do it against Canelo because his inside is too good.
Terence’s age, punch power
“I know he (Crawford) can hit, but I don’t know if it’s a freak. Crawford will have to fight at a pace that is almost uncontrollable, “Greg says of what Terence should do for him to stop Canelo. But what we need to remember about Bud is that he is not a child. If Bud was 28 or 29, I could be, ‘Ah s ***, maybe.’ But he is 30 plus (Comment: Crawford turns 38 on September 28). “
Crawford’s knockout comes from contact with counter-shots that his opponents do not see. He has never been an enormous puncher in any weight class he fought with. Even at 135, he did not have the power of former featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa, who fought in his third weight class. Gamboa hit harder than Crawford.
Masterclass, not ko
“This is where it kind of shoots out, which is why I say we won’t see a downtime, but we see one of the Masterclass actions (of Crawford). I see it, but I don’t see a knockout, ‘says Hackett.
Crawford fought at a slow pace to 154 in his last fight after a year outside the ring. He is clearly packed on weight, and he is up for the Canelo fight. This means that he will be slower and move at a measured pace, because he will not have the endurance that carries all the extra weight.
