Callum Smith says promoter Eddie Hearn gave him no updates on whether his next fight against WBC and WBA (ordinary) light heavyweight champion David Benavidez will be next. Smith (31-2, 22 costs) mentions that Hearn is holding a few meetings this week, and that he will let him know what the plan is for his next battle.
The way Callum speaks, Sounding Wishy-Washy As for benavidez (30-0.24 coes), he does not seem to be motivated to fight. If Smith wants a fight against a specific boxer, he talks a storm, but in this case he doesn’t seem enthusiastic about the fight against ‘the Mexican Monster’ Benavidez.
Look at the big battle
It’s easy to understand why Callium and Hearn don’t want to fight for David. Smith has the WBO -Tussentage light heavyweight title and is able to challenge the winner of the Dmitri Bivol- Against Artur Betterbiev 3 Trilogy Fight for big money. Callum could possibly throw away the potential option for himself if he was fighting against Benavidez. It is one thing for Callum to scrape with a win over Joshua Buatsi, but it is a very different kettle of fish that Benavidez takes on. He is not flawed.
I read Hearn like a book. He is not going to leave Callum Smith nowhere near David Banavidez as he is 34 and is in a position to get a profitable payday against the Bivol-Beterbiev trilogy winner. Turki Alalshikh seems to love to choose British fighters. It is a no-brainer that he wants to use Callum as the next opponent for anyone who has the victory in the third battle between Biblical and Artur.
He knows that if he places Benavidez against the winner, they are likely to lose the talented ‘Mexican monster’. So, instead, he will choose Smith as a fish food for one of them. The British will love to see that game. American fans will be careless, but I doubt they see that they will even be considered. It is a fight that would be completely focused on the British market. Enter the Bivol-Beterbiev a starter in Callum.
Hearn’s silence
“Eddie (Hearn) says he has some meetings this week, and he will let me know what the plan is. I don’t know. I’m ready to see what the next step is,” Callum Smith said ifl tv When asked what the plans were to fight to David Banavidez.
“Regardless of who it is, I’m in a good position. So, it will be a good fight. He is a very, very good fighter, someone I love, ‘Smith says of Benavidez. “We were both champions at 168 at the same time. This is a battle I would always think at some point. It probably should have happened at the time, but it didn’t. ‘
Does it sound like a person interested in fighting benavidez? Smith does not look interested in that battle at all. He knows that he is in a good position to fight for big cash against Betterbiev or Biblical, and he does not want to confuse it by being submissive by David benavidez.
“Now we’re both at 175. This is a battle I love. I think stylistically, it should be fine too. So we will see if this is the next option. I’m sure it will be a good one. I have no idea, ‘Callum said how far the negotiations with Benavidez have progressed.
“I’ll grasp him (Hearn). He mentions that he thinks he (benavidez) may make me an offer of PBC, but there was no offer yet. So we will have to sit and wait. Hopefully things are moving this week, no matter who it is. I want to know when the next fight is, so I can get back into the gym.
