Caleb Plant coach Stephen Edwards is worried about how his face broke apart so quickly in his loss of Armando Resendiz last Saturday night. Edwards says that the way plant’s face began to swell played a role in its 12-round defeat decided to resendiz (16-2, 11 COs) in the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.
Resendiz’s downward bumps
The reason the skin of the plant broke so quickly was not age -related. It was because Resendiz sat on his shots, which is a Pulling effect On plant’s face. They are not straight bumps like Caleb typically hit in fighting against David Benavidez, Trevor McCumby and Anthony Dirrell.
It was shots that threw resendiz with a downward movement that had a tearing, bruising effect on the face of the plant.
Stephen mentions that he wants to see plant again (23-3, 14 COs) before determining whether to retire. Plant lost its WBA-TUSShrian super-middleweight title to Resendiz with the scores 116-112, 116-112 for Resendiz and 115-113 for planting.
Caleb was supposed to win that battle to get the Jermall Charlo match, which would have been a well-paid collision on PPV.
Facial damage affected the loss of the plant
“The bumps bothered him a little. His face came up a lot. He just showed the wear and tear of the fighting, ‘said coach Stephen Edwards Sean zitteL over Caleb Plant’s fight against Armando Resendiz last Saturday night.
Plant should not have fought against Resendiz on the inside. It was a mistake because he had shown fights in his past, when Jarrett Hurt, Fernando Paliza and Elijah Garcia that he is a nightmare to fight close. Caleb’s recent performance against Trevor McCumby made him think he could fight and dominate Resendiz on the inside as he did against this man.
“His skin kind of badly broke, and I think it’s one of the things that caused victory. He came back to the third round, and he had this little something on his nose. I was like ‘damning, where did it come from? He barely hit, ‘Edwards said of planting with a little sob between his eyes to the third.
Plant hit with shots of resendiz coming down on his face and ripped to its skin. It would have been impossible for Resendiz to get away with the battle as the plant stayed on the outside. Again, he thought he could fight on the inside of this man and he paid a heavy price.
The reason the plant was cut in the third round is that it was supported against the ropes and took a large left hand from Resendiz. The shot hit with full force, and he couldn’t roll with it because he was quiet.
Plant’s retirement has not yet decided
“You don’t want to chase one night in judgment. I didn’t see anything wrong with his speed and reflexes, but it just seemed like the push had a greater effect on him, ‘says Edwards. “They (the push) have a major effect on him (plant). I think Resendiz is a decent guy, but I don’t look at him as he has bricks in his hands. “
Resendiz does not have bricks in his hands, but he hits the inside well. Plant has dedicated it. Plant is a good fighter, but he was never a great talent. Years ago, when he beat fighters like Jose Uzcategui, Caleb Truax and Mike Lee, he still didn’t look good. He beat average fighters, who do not compare to the top fighters these days.
We saw how plant struggled against the lower level in his last fight against the fighter McCumby. That man is an additional contender and nowhere as good as the top 10-level fighters. It is not that the plant is over the hill. He is the same as always. It’s just that the fighters are now better at 168 than when he made a name for himself from 2018 to 2021.
“I want to see more of Caleb before I say he must hang it. But I would say that the push had a big influence on him than I thought they would have,” Edwards said. “I’ve seen Resendiz fighting a few times, and I’ve never considered him this big, evil puncher. I just thought he was a strong forward man. Of course, he has heavy hands. He has 16 wins with 11 knockouts. ‘
