Brentford claimed a sensational 4-3 Premier League win over Burnley at Turf Moor. Mikkel Damsgaard’s late goal secured all three points in a spectacular encounter.
Burnley, 19th in the league, were desperate for points to escape the relegation zone. Seventh-placed Brentford were looking to strengthen their bid for European qualification. Both teams brought mixed recent form into the contest.
The visitors started brightly, opening the scoring in the ninth minute. Mikkel Damsgaard headed home after a precise assist from Dango Ouattara. Brentford continued their strong attacking display.
Igor Thiago then doubled Brentford’s lead in the 25th minute, expertly converting a pass from Damsgaard. Nine minutes later, Kevin Schade extended the lead, firing in Brentford’s third goal. Burnley looked overwhelmed by the quick succession of strikes.
Just before the break, Burnley found a lifeline. In the third minute of added time, Michael Kayode inadvertently put the ball into his own net. This own goal reduced the deficit to 3-1, giving the home team some hope.
The half-time whistle saw Burnley in need of a massive response. They faced a challenging two-goal deficit but had momentum from the end of the first half. Brentford needed to maintain their defensive composure.
Burnley came out of the break with renewed determination. Immediately, Jaidon Anthony capitalized, scoring in the 47th minute after an assist from Hannibal Mejbri. Turf Moor erupted as the deficit was reduced to a single goal.
The comeback was completed on time. Zian Flemming, assisted by Mejbri once again, fired home the equalizer for Burnley. The home team had recovered from a three-goal deficit.
Burnley thought they had gone ahead in the 78th minute when Flemming found the net again. However, VAR intervention disallowed the goal for offside, denying a potential turning point. The decision left the local crowd frustrated.
With moments to go, Brentford struck a decisive blow. Damsgaard got his second goal of the game in the 93rd minute, assisted by Rico Henry. That late attack propelled the Bees back into the lead. Burnley had a further goal disallowed by Aaron Barnes in the 98th minute for handball, sealing their fate.
Brentford’s attacking output was evident with an expected goals (xG) of 1.94 compared to Burnley’s 0.97. The visitors managed a total of 16 shots, with seven on target, while Burnley had 12 shots, with three on target. Brentford also had 59% possession.
This thrilling victory saw Brentford move up to seventh in the Premier League table, cementing their European aspirations. Meanwhile, Burnley were stuck in 19th place, deeply rooted in the relegation battle after a heartbreaking defeat.
