Bryson finally made a hole-in-one over his house

A social media trend in 2024 is to film yourself every day while trying to accomplish a difficult task.

Many of these videos are nonsense. When it comes to golf, there are people who play every day until they level up on every hole or become a scratch golfer or reach a level they’ve never reached before. In most cases, the feat is so impossible that it’s not really fun trying to see someone get there.

In the case of YouTube powerhouse Bryson DeChambeauhe joined this trend with a challenge he can complete. And he He did fill it out.

After 16 days of effort, DeChambeau drilled a hole in one above his house.

The shot appeared to be about 100 yards or so. For each day in the challenge, he got that number of shots to try. The first day was one ball, the second day was two balls and so on.

On day 16, it finally hit.

The series had golf fans in awe

The videos were filmed as YouTube Shorts. Bryson had someone on the roof filming down on his practice green. On the other side of the house, Bryson had a mattress and a camera pointing at his tracker.

Between him and the hole? This would be his house (mostly glass). The green was well below the level of the house with several rings of stones leading to the surface.

If a 20 handicap tried this, it would be very likely that Bryson’s homeowners insurance would be involved. Broken glass would be EVERYWHERE.

But with Bryson hitting all the shots, there was no such concern. In fact, every shot looked almost identical, easily cleaning house. The shot distribution was so tight that basically every attempt is within 10 feet.

On the first day, he posted a 25-second clip of him hitting a shot in about two feet. More than 320,000 people have watched so far.

With each day, Bryson added a little different flavor. On the fourth day, more than 700,000 people saw it try to make an ace wearing flip flops. On the ninth day, he was on the verge of a mental breakdownclaiming the challenge was “going to his head”.

By day 14, looked like him He did make an ace— but two balls sitting near the hole from earlier attempts appeared to block his 14th shot as it rolled toward the hole. It’s hard to say if it would have gone in for sure, but there was definitely a good chance (can someone clean the balls after every shot?). And on the 15th day, His last shot took a big bounce, hit the hole and then bounced out.

As of this writing, more than 8 million viewers (!) have watched the challenge, and I’m sure that number will be old news in a nutshell. These were just short clips lasting less than a minute each. YouTube Shorts allows up to three minutes per download, but none of Bryson’s videos lasted that long.

When I spoke with Fat Perez for my feature on ithe mentioned that Bryson is deep into the YouTube algorithm game to maximize his audience. We have seen this with his wildly successful Breaking 50 series and we’re seeing it again here with this challenge. Each of these videos has a catchy title that tricks people into clicking on it, but I don’t think it’s that necessary considering how many comments there are on each video (more than 1000 comments in some cases). It is attractive content.

So what a day it was It is assumed to get? Our friend and statistician Lou Stagner suggested that Bryson had about a 1 in 175 chance of making an ace on this shot.

With his 134th shot being the ace maker, DeChambeau had to make his ace on either the 15th or 16th. Here’s what Stagner posted before Bryson’s hit.

Keep in mind that Bryson couldn’t see the flag because he was hitting home – so that might have thrown the numbers off a bit. Also, Stagner admitted he wasn’t sure how far the shot was, so it’s hard to determine exactly what the odds should be.

Either way, it only took 134 shots. This is extremely impressive.

What was the purpose of this?

One comment I read over and over on these videos is that people had a lot of fun with the challenge.

“I don’t want him to make it because I love uploads,” one YouTube user wrote.

Another user wrote: “This 64 year old grandma is so invested in this! Keep it up young man, you got this! I’m calling Day 19, Shot 7.”

You were a little pessimistic, grandma!

We’re at a point in the golf season where there’s not a ton going on. Some of us are waiting for the PGA Tour season to start again in January; others will not be invested until Masters; many of you are bypassing the pro golf competition entirely in favor of YouTube golf.

But a challenge like this is easily digestible and fun to watch. It shows how much faith these guys have by not even bothering to clean a glass house. And you can just put a beach towel and cover all the photos. The consistency is insane.

We all want to be entertained and informed. This series has done that for me and it seems I’m not alone.
