Bruno Fernandes reveals his main concern after Man Utd’s latest defeat

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes says his team’s lack of confidence is his biggest concern after Sunday’s worrying defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The match marked United’s first defeat of 2025 after promising recent results against Arsenal and Liverpool in the FA Cup and Premier League respectively. But it is part of a wider slump that the squad have struggled to break all season – just three wins from Ruben Amorim’s 11 league games in charge nearly two months ago and six defeats in the same period.

Brighton broke the deadlock with a simple ball above the opening minutes at Old Trafford. But while United bounced back relatively well, they dominated the rest of the first half and pulled level when Fernandes himself converted from the penalty spot, they scored again immediately after the restart and had no further reply. It ended 3-1 in favor of Brighton.

“We could have stayed in the game at 2-1 (but) we also lacked a bit of belief at that point, where we could get back into the game and change the game,” Fernandes said, speaking to ON TV.

“Then he concedes to make it 3-1 and from there everything becomes a little more difficult. We still had time to get back into the game, we still had time to do something different, but what worries me the most is the lack of confidence that we have at the moment to do the things we are capable of doing”, lamented the skipper.

“I don’t mind anybody losing the ball to try something to try to help the team, but we have to get the best out of the players. We need the players to believe in themselves that they are capable of turning things around for us.”

Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler made reference united owning “world-class” players when he later reflected on the game. But that level wasn’t there to see. Next up are other tough games, at home to Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, before traveling to Fulham on Sunday. Then it’s a day in Romania against FCSB, and Crystal Palace at home.
