Bruno Fernandes believes Ruben Amorim has the potential to turn Manchester United into title winners again.

Amorim is the sixth permanent Man Utd manager since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, taking over after the sacking of Erik ten Hag and Ruud van Nistelrooy’s interim spell.

Despite some cup success, the Red Devils have failed to add to their 20 English league titles since Ferguson left, watching Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and even Leicester City taste glory.

In fact, United have finished in the top two in just two of the last 11 seasons.

While no titles will be expected immediately under Amorim, his long-term mission will be to return United to the pinnacle of English football.

The 39-year-old arrives with a strong pedigree after guiding Sporting CP to two Portuguese titles in four years after a drought dating back to 2002. The Lions are also well placed to add a 21st title to their collection, being at the top of the classification. Portugal League table, six points ahead of Porto and perfect after 11 games.

Fernandes, the former Sporting player, hopes his compatriot can replicate that kind of success at Old Trafford.

“I hope it does the same thing here because you know sometimes one person can change the energy of a space, if the time is right,” Fernandes said (via Official Man Utd website).

“We hope he can come, and this is the right time for him to come and bring his energy, his qualities and his knowledge of football, because he has done something very, very special at Sporting.

“If anyone doubts it, it’s just a matter of looking at the past.

“The sport had to go about 20 years without winning the league, and it won the league again, and won it twice in four years with a very young team, at a time of change.

“So hopefully he can do the same here for us and (hopefully) it’s a successful time for all of us.”
