Bruno Fernandes has admitted he called Erik ten Hag to apologize for his role in the Dutchman’s departure from Manchester United.
Ten Hag was relieved of his duties last week after a bitterly disappointing start to the season, with Fernandes’ poor form – he was on a 12-match clean sheet at the time of the manager’s sacking – one of United’s many problems this season
Fernandes acknowledged the role his performances played Have Hag‘s leaves and urged the rest of the united team to take responsibility when he revealed a phone call with his former boss following his departure from Old Trafford.
“We know Erik has left, it’s not good for anyone at the club when the coach leaves,” he explained. “The team is not the best, the results are not the best and he is the one who pays for it.
“Whenever you see a manager leave you have to blame yourself, it’s because the team is not that good. It’s easier to get rid of a manager than 15 players. I spoke to the manager and told him to apologize. he, I was disappointed that he left and I tried to help him, he was not scoring goals, we are not scoring goals and I feel responsible.”
Fernandes’ sentiment did not go down well with former United captain Roy Keane, who launched a scathing review of the Portugal international on Sky Sports.
“Too little, too late,” Keane said of Fernandes’ message.
“It’s always awkward interviews for the players. I don’t think Bruno has shown leadership. I don’t think he’s done enough as United captain. I don’t think he should be too proud of himself. The players have let the manager down .I’ve played with some great coaches and that idea when a player says, ‘I feel sorry for the coach,’ is hard to hear.
“It’s not even about liking the manager. Your own DNA should suggest you’re a good team player. You roll your sleeves up, you dig in. This United team doesn’t.”
