Carlos Alcaraz has crashed out of the Davis Cup Final 8 in a massive blow to Spain.
World No. 1 Alcaraz announced today a scan revealed edema in the right leg injury he suffered falling to Jannik Sinner in Sunday’s ATP Finals final and has forced him to withdraw from the Davis Cup.

Alcaraz suffered a right hamstring injury for a comeback near the end of the opening set of his 7-6(4), 7- loss to Sinner. Alcaraz returned to the court in the second set with a taped right leg.
The six-time Grand Slam champion traveled to Bologna to try to play Davis Cup, but the test showed swelling in his right leg.
“I am very sorry to announce that I will not be able to play with Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna,” Alcaraz posted today on Instagram. “I have an edema in the sciatic nerve of my right leg and the medical recommendation is not to compete.
“I’ve always said that playing for Spain is the greatest thing there is and I was very excited to help fight for (the Davis Cup). I’m going home with pain…”
Alcaraz’s absence means three of the top 10 men ranked in the world will not compete in Bologna. last week, sinful AND Lorenzo Musetti each was officially retired by Italy’s two-time defending champions.
Meanwhile, Spain, aiming for its seventh Davis Cup championship, goes into Wednesday’s Davis Cup quarterfinal against the Czech Republic without its top stars in the doubles rankings: Alcaraz and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Jaume Munar, Pedro Martinez, Marcel Granollers and Alcaraz were initially named in the Spanish Davis Cup team.
World number 14 Davidovich Fokina was overlooked for a place in Spain’s Davis Cup squad and said the decision rests solely on his shoulders Captain David Ferrer.
“It was a decision of captain David Ferrer and I respect it. Davidovich Fokina told MARCA. “Obviously, I would have liked to be on the list representing my country, but this time he has decided to have other players.
“David called me a week ago to say that he wouldn’t count on me in the first list. Before that call I had told him to count on me. It will always be a pride for me to represent Spain, but in the end it was his decision and I accepted it.”
However, as the second highest ranked Spaniard, Davidovich Fokina said he believes he deserved a place in the squad.
“Being number (14) in the world, I think I deserved to be among the top four players in my country, with all due respect to my teammates, who, as I said, are also great players,” Davidovich Fokina told MARCA.
