Xander Zayas (21-0, 13 COs) stopped Slava Spomer (20-1, 11 COs) in the ninth round of a non-competitive battle Friday night at junior middleweight in a top-advanced event in the Madison Square Garden Theater In New York City.
Zayas, 22, used his defense to hit all night and not beat all night, and missed the light, wild-punching spice, with mostly everything he threw. It was surprising how badly wiped tonight, because he didn’t have the kind of talent to take it an entertaining battle.
Body blaze tells the story
In ninth place, Zayas ended up a left hand to the middle of the spiceer who hurt him. He then labeled himself with a few more body shots, causing the fight to be stopped. Spomer was not happy about the downtime, but he did not throw anything back to make the referee to let him stay there. The time of the downtime was at 2:01 of the ninth. Given how one -sided the rounds were, the competition must have been stopped against seventh because Spomer beat.
Spomer occasionally connected to his loops, but by seventh place he was tired of Xander’s body and head shots. Zayas’ regular low blows did not help. The referee took a practical approach to policing the shots under the belt with which Zayas is connected. There must have been a point deduction.
