Boxing Results: Vergil Ortiz Jr. destroyed Erickson Lubin in two rounds to retain WBC interim super welterweight title in Fort Worth


WBC Interim Junior Middleweight Champion Vergil Ortiz, Jr. (24-0, 22 KOs) stopped former WBC Silver Super Welterweight champion Erickson ‘The Hammer’ Lubin (27-3, 19 KOs) in the second round on Saturday night at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The contest was stopped at 1:30 of the second round of a scheduled 12 rounds.

In the first round, Lubin controlled his reach using an effective jab. In the final seconds, Ortiz finally landed a flurry of punches. In the second round, Ortiz had Lubin against the ropes, landing a flurry of punches until referee James Green called a halt.

In the co-main event, super middleweight Darius ‘DFG’ Fulghum (14-1-1 (12 KOs) fought to a 10-round majority draw against David ‘Dynamite’ Stevens (15-2-1 (10 KOs). There was too much at stake for the vacant WBA Continental North America super middleweight title.

In the first three rounds it was even with Fulghum having a lead. In the fourth round, Stevens knocked out Fulghum and landed an upper hand right on the chin in the last minute. Too much concluded.

In the fifth round, Fulghum knocked out Stevens’ mouthpiece after a minute. Stevens came back to take the lap. Again, too much holding, and the fans let them know it. In the sixth round, Stevens clinched it by pinning Fulghum, tying the score.

In the seventh round Stevens landed a hard right on the chin of Fulghum after a minute. Stevens was cautioned for using his forearm several times. In the eighth round, between the clinch, Stevens had an edge.

In the ninth round, Stevens was cautioned for holding another close round with the last one deciding the winner. In the tenth and final round, the fans let it be known that they don’t like all the holding in a fight that could be a draw.

The scores were 96-94 for Fulghum, 95-95 and 95-95. Laurence Cole was the referee.

Robin ‘ROBZ’ Safar (19-0 (13) KOs) defeated Derick ‘Dmilliz’ Miller Jr. (18-1 (10 KOs) defeated by a 10-round unanimous decision to capture the vacant WBA Continental Americas cruiserweight title.

In the second round’s final seconds, Safar Miller butted his head and lost a point from referee Laurence Cole. In the third round’s final minute, Safar rocked Miller with an overhand right on the chin.

In the fourth round, Safar beat Miller big time. In the sixth round’s final twenty seconds, Safar knocked out the mouthpiece of Miller with a right to the chin. Miller looked exhausted. In the seventh round it was all Safar with Miller barely hanging in there.

In the eighth round’s final minute, Miller landed a right and got the attention of Safar, who came back well in a close round. In the ninth round it was all Safar knocking out Miller, who would come back on occasion.

In the tenth and final round it was all Safar, but Miller showed heart by hanging in and getting rocked in the final seconds with a right to the chin.

The scores were 98-91, 99-90 and 99-90.

Middleweight prospect Amari ‘The Reaper’ Jones (15-0 (13 KOs) stopped Shady Gamhour (14-3 (9 KOs)) at 2:54 of the third round of a scheduled eight-rounder.

In the first two rounds, that was all Jones switched to southpaw. In the third round’s last thirty seconds, a chop right on the temple of Gamhour, and down he went for an 8 count from referee Ruben Perez. When he got up, Jones was all over him, landing a right and another on the way down again, with referee Perez waving it away.

Middleweight Eric ‘Cowboy’ Priest (16-0-1 (8 KOs) battled to an eight-round draw against Esneiker Correa (16-6-3 (14 KOs).

In the first three laps, Priest had a lead. In the fourth round’s final seconds, Priest landed a combination and caught the attention of Correra.

In the fifth round, Priest punched Correa several times in the body. In the seventh round, Priest continued to come forward, knocking out the mouthpiece of Correa, who was showing off in the final seconds. In the eighth and final round, Correa had his best round, facing Priest.

The scores were 79-73 Priest, 77-75 Correra and 76-76. James Green was the referee.

Heavyweight 2024 Olympian Joshua Edwards (4-0 (4 KOs) knocked out Zeno ‘The Viking Hammer’ Vooris (5-1 (5 KOs) at 2:35 of the third round of a scheduled six rounds).

In the first round, it was all Edwards, who switched to southpaw on occasion, with Voorhis landing just one hit. In the second round, Vooris was cut on the right eyebrow. In the last minute, Vooris was cut on the left eyebrow and bled from the nose.

In the third round, Vooris was bleeding from the left eyebrow with blood smeared across the side of his face when Vooris’ corner stopped the fight. Robert Capo was the referee.

Light welterweight Javier “El Galliaunto” Meza (5-0 (2 KOs) defeated the tough Joshua Briones (3-5-1 (2 KOs) by a six-round unanimous decision).

In the first round, it was all Meza. In the second round, both boxers had nosebleeds. With a minute left, Briones knocked the mouthpiece out of Meza. In the third round, everyone had their moments.

In the fourth round’s midpoint, Meza hurt Briones with a right uppercut to the body. In the final seconds, Meza caught a flurry, with Briones against the ropes. In the fifth round, a rush from Meza nearly put Briones through the ropes. In the sixth and final rounds, in the last minute, Briones rocked Meza and bent his knees with a right to the chin.

The scores were 59-55, 58-56 and 58-56. Ruben Perez was the referee.

Welterweight Samuel ‘Trouble’ Castellanos (4-0 (3 KOs) knocked out Ricky ‘Slick Rick’ Elizalde (0-2) at 1:55 of the second round of a scheduled four-rounder.

In the first round it was all Castellanos as Elizade never landed a punch, instead running and clinching. In the second round, with a minute remaining, Elizalde fell to a knee seconds after taking a punch as his corner threw in the towel. Robert Capo was the referee
